My Surprise!

Yeah! I pretty much had the best night of my life last night! Well, my mom was talking on the phone with my grandma (I call her Grammie and I will in this post… just to be quicker that way) and my mom headed up to her room. We thought that was pretty weird (or at least I did!) When she’s done on the phone, my mom says that Grammie has a surprise for me and my brother, and that we would get it after church on Sunday night! When this happened I think it was Friday night. So you know… when you know you are getting a surprise you go absolutely ballistic, right? Well, that’s what happened to me. I started going “Is it a trip to Disney World??!!” (I’m sorry Grammie… I got desperate!) “OOh, I wonder if they got us a puppy!!” But my surprise was WAY better than a puppy! For you that don’t know, my Grammie is a chef… a REAL chef! And a really good one, by the way! Anyway, we get to their house Sunday night, and I was just looking all around trying to find whatever they had for me! I know… weird huh? So, I think my parents and grandparents were trying to bug me by talking for an hour before I got my surprise!

Okay, here’s my wonderful, fantastic, amazing… okay… I got my Grammies… KITCHEN AID MIXER!!! It might not be that amazing to you, but I was soooooo happy! It’s kind of one of those older ones… but I don’t care one teeny, tiny bit! It’s a white one, and it works really great! And, it looks spotless! There were also some other things that went with it. My Grammie said that she would ask her boss if I could go to one of her cooking classes with her. She teaches classes at one of the cooking schools nearby, and she wants to take me to one when they make cookies! (I think that’s what she said!) She”s just not sure because I might be a little too young to go… but she’ll look in to it! YAY! OH yeah, she also said she’s been working on a cookbook for a bout 3 years, and she wants to collaborate with me (I’m not really sure what that means but I think she wants me to help her with it) and do some recipes together! I could be the assistant writer of a cookbook!!! COOL BEANS!!! I guess you could say I had a pretty big night! I made cookies today with it, and I LOVED it!! Because some of you know I’ve wanted a Kitchen Aid for the longest time, and when she gave all those things to me, I really was blown away! Anyway, just wanted to share one of my cooking journeys with you! So, if you’ve been thinking about getting a Kitchen Aid… GET ONE!!!

Wow! Is it really possible to be too busy for cooking?

Yes, it is VERY possible. My mom just realized I haven’t done an entree since the 11th. I’m sorry it’s been so long. I’ve been focusing on a lot of other things… my other amazing talent! Yep, I had a huge violin thing that just ended today. It’s called the STAHR Suzuki workshop. It’s basically a thing that goes for 2 days and you go both days and polish your playing and then the last thing we did was have a concert for all the parents. I learned how to fiddle a little bit by an amazing lady! I also have been doing other things with my violin. Well, before I go any farther, his name is Charlie! (my violin) Anyway, I had a competition with Bethel Christian School. You know, the school I do band with. So it’s a competition that the whole school can compete in, with a lot of different categories. It can be Home Ec., painting, sculpture, duet acting, Bible Teaching, and lots of music stuff too. And a whole lot more… a WHOLE lot more! So anyways, I did a duet with my friend. WE did a violin cello duet. Well in the competition, we were called a small instrumental ensemble. I felt more professional with that name!! But anyway, back to what I wanted to say in the first place. We competed in our first part of competition and won!!!, actually we tied with our competition, but who cares? So, we are heading to state competition, for our second and last performance! So, there will be a lot of competition to face, but we know we can win… even though the friend I’m doing it with has no confidence at all. I told her we would probably win and she goes ” No we didn’t do good at all.” But of course, I was the right one, because I had confidence. Anyway, I’ve gone far enough. I just got on to tell you about violin stuff, and that I would get cooking in about 2 days. So yeah, 2 days it is and I will definitely get cooking!!!! I hope you’ve made good meals, even though I’m usually the one to do that… but if you have, do tell me what you’ve made. I’m happy to hear anything. Oh! And if you’ve cooked, thank you so much for taking over for me!!! KEEP COOKIN’!!!

Pasta Frittata

Last night I made an interesting sort of a quiche.  A very yummy one!  What I did was cook up some red onion and green peppers in some oil.  Then what I did was use the pasta sauce that I made a few nights ago for the tomato part of this recipe.  So when the vegetables were done I put those into the pasta sauce.  Then the cooked pasta I made for the pasta sauce went into the pan and then a layer of sauce went on top of that and then some cheese went on top of that!!!!  And then I did that same thing again!  Yeah, it sounds like a lot of work but it was actually really fun!  So when all of that was layered, I put and egg mixture on top.  It was 8 eggs with 3 tbls. of milk!  Then it went on top (like I said!)!!!  I had to leave it there for about 15 minutes and then I stuck it in the oven for about another 15 minutes!  When it came out I was so ready for dinner!  Doesn’t it look good!?  It was very good (but someone in my family is q-ous so he didn’t have any because there was eggs in it. 😦 )  But I thought it was good!  REALLY GOOD!!  I’m having some if we don’t go to Chick-Fil-A!!!  You know… the best fast food place EVER!!!???   Well anyways… Bon Appetit!!!

Basic Pasta Sauce with Spaghetti noodles

Tonight I made a pasta sauce!!!! Yeah!!! It tasted so good, my mouth watered even when I ate it! I took three cans of crushed tomatoes, one small onion, three cloves of garlic, a pinch of thyme, a bay leaf, fresh basil and fresh parsley and (FINALY!) cooked it!!! yum yum! I didn’t use any meat which I was kind of sad about at first, but when I dipped my spoon into the sauce for a taste, I had second thoughts!!! I made spaghetti noodles with it too. I was amazed! I gave a piece of my Grandma Gormans chocolate cake to a lady at my church and she loves me now!!!!  She came up to me and said “Dana, I had a piece of your cake and it was delicious! I didn’t share a single bite with anyone!”  I was proud of my accomplishment!!! Not only that, but a real chef… like the real deal wants to meet me!!!!!!  Well, his wife works with my mom so that’s kind of a cheat thing, but who cares!  He wants me to call him and make date to meet him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  🙂  I’m so excited!!!!  Anyways!  That’s the scoop!

Pork Chops with Mustard-Onion Gravy (or it should’ve been)

Tonight… yeah, I DIDN’T have a blast in the kitchen. 😦  Well, what I tried to do was make pork chops with mustard onion gravy.  I had a little incident… yeah, they’re NOT fun at all.  So, I cooked my pork chops,  then started my gravy.  What I did was take one onion and sweat that up (cover the pan with tin foil or a lid), then I added some white cooking wine into it.  I added a few herbs and (I think!!!).  Then when the onions were nice and tender, I added my pork chops back in… here’s my problem.   I had to let the pork sit and braise in the gravy for 40 minutes.  I had to cover the pan with foil and a lid.  I go to check on it so I open it up to see that my wonderful, delicious, ruined gravy is all burnt up!!! 😦  I got so sad.   But to my great luck, the pork was fine!!! Hurray!  Anyway!   I fixed up my meal by making a gravy mix (you know the ones that come in the big container and all you use is water and gravy mix??), and it turned out fine.  I’ll try it again.  Meanwhile, I’ll try to figure out what went wrong!  I think it was because the recipe told me to keep and eye on the gravy and to stir it every once in a while… and I didn’t do that!!! Well anyway, I’ll be doing it again soon!!! YAY!

Old-Fashioned Mac an’ cheese!

Yep, I think that everything old fashioned is the best! This stuff was AMAZING!!! I mean out of this world!!! While your reading this I want you to stand up and give Mr. Richard Sax a big round of applause. I’m not kidding… do it!!! I think he is the best. This isn’t just my doing. Richard did everything for this cookbook… he had a very bad disease (which of course, I don’t know what it is, but I do know he was very sick). And even though he’s dead, he still feels alive to me. I give him a big piece of my heart! I love him soooo much, and when I think that he is dead, he isn’t to me, and he never will be. He is making my life a whole lot better. So, Richard!, BON APPETIT!!!

Grandma Gormans Chocolate Cake

I think that title sounds good an’ satisfactory!!!! YUM YUM!!! Was that thing good or what??? Anyway!!! This was the BEST chocolate cake I ever had!!! It was gourmet tasting… like the REAL stuff. I had fun making this… except, I made a HUGE mess. Not only was the kitchen a wreck already, but I got flour EVERYWHERE! I had a bunch of fun though! I think my next goal to chocolate cake is making DEATH BY CHOCOLATE!!! Yep… that seven layered cake that everyone talks about! I don’t think I’m brave enough!!! Yes I am!!! I can do anything I set my mind to! Be sticking around to see if I did it or not!!! I’m making plans already!

This is a picture of Death By Chocolate I found on the internet...someday....
